The Grumpy German

Rejected! [kinda NSFW]

I remember seeing those, what, eight or ten years ago at the Fantasy Filmfest as a supporting movie for some other movie whose name I forgot and was thrilled. The clips get more and more NSFW as they progress and actually the less violent ones are in my opinion much funnier than the others. The first two are my favorites, but they are all worth watching. Don Hertzfeld’s official page can be found here.

We are still on the West Coast, enjoying the weather, feasting on ripe figs in the backyard, and sampling tiny kiwis whose name I also forgot but which are the size of a gummy bear and have a taste like ten kiwis laced with lemon juice – absolutely delicious. I can’t wait for when we have our own backyard and live in a climate that makes gardening fun and not feel like toiling in the searing Connecticut sun…

Back from the Eastern Planes

I’m back from the Eastern Planes and 104ºF. Trust me, while it feels like an oven it’s dry heat which I think is way easier to handle than the humid, muggy variety. I also took a bunch of sweet photos in the Oregon High Desert, which will go up on my Flickr as soon as I get a chance to go through the pile and edit some of them.

Visiting Eastern Washington and Oregon was great, the landscapes are so amazing, it’s like being on a different planet. The moment we stepped out of the train in Central Oregon I could smell the pine trees and felt at home instantly. The High Desert rocks!

Crab Races!

Crab Races!

Originally uploaded by Bearded Dave

Just got back from a cruise along the San Juan Islands, WA. We had a great time, crab races, crab eating, majestic sunburns. I don’t know whether I could completely get into sailing, but it was a lot of fun and being on the West Coast in general does A LOT to lift my spirits. I am taking more pictures (because there is more to take pictures of) and am generally more relaxed and happy.

Yay for crabs!

Saddam’s Palaces: An Interview with Richard Mosse

Interesting interview with Richard Mosse and more photos from his Iraq project BREACH on BLDG|BLOG, one of the blogs that made it into my “favorites folder” a long long time ago. Well worth a visit!

After the Shlep II

After the shlep is before the shlep, as they say, but believe me, I’ve just about had it with moving stuff around, popping hernias, and sending my disks flying around the room like gristle-shuriken. Seriously. However, finally I’m done and the next move might be in store for me in about two years, so hey – I’m a lucky guy.

Moving back to the US was a big decision, but I don’t think I’ll regret it. Where else can you see big people tumbling down the stairs, eh? Also, I spend some weeks in Seattle before returning to the East Coast and that visit set the long-term goal: moving to the West Coast! Slowly but surely, one state at the time. ;-)

On other fronts, I’ve discovered pulp, or kinda pulpy, crime novels, but favourite at the moment are the Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child. They are thoroughly addictive and when you can handle one or two lapses in internal logic they are a great read. My significant other eats them up within a day, reading non-stop – even I was impressed. Another thing I’ve learned was that owning a car here lifts your standart of living considerably. You can actually visit places! I live in a place where a simple five-minute trip to, say, IKEA, turns into a 4 hour ordeal (incredibly shitty and/or non-existent public transport) without a car.

Hmm, what else? I haven’t written in a while and all the fun things that happened and that I wanted to write about are now gone somewhere in the grey sludge within my skull…

…but don’t worry – I will update more regularly. There were some big personal events happening in the last few weeks that had to be taken care of and essentially I had to channel all my energy into those. Not much time for playing around, no sir. But things are calming down now and returning to normal. Yay!

Oh, and do watch the new Batman movie!

PS: Did I mention that it is so incredibly hot here that I’m literally sweating my weight away?

This blog is updated more or less frequently, but not daily, and I post more personal stuff here. There is also an additional incarnation of this blog on Tumblr, called Bearded Dave @ Tumblr, which I'm using to post little notes, pictures, etc. that I come across and think are neat. You can also follow the Grumpy German on Twitter or Friendfeed. Go nuts!
